    SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR WHS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

    1. Program: MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Program

    Location: Cambridge, Mass
     
    Description: Three different programs available
     
    Engineering Experience at MIT (E2@MIT)
    One-week program, students take one of six intensive project-based courses, participate in admissions and financial aid sessions, and participate in lab tours and social events.
     
    Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)
    Intense six-week program immerses students in life at MIT through math and science courses, a challenging hands-on elective course, workshops, guest speakers, and social events.
       
    MIT Online Science, Technology, and Engineering Community (MOSTEC)
    From July through January, students in this online program discuss research, receive admissions and financial aid advice, and attend webinars. They also complete online science and engineering projects that they present during a five-day conference on MIT’s campus.

    2. Program: Summer Volunteer Program for Teens at Grady Hospital

    Location: Atlanta, Georgia 

    Description: Grady’s Teen Volunteer Program is open to students ages 15-17, who are eager to make a difference in their community this summer! Teen Volunteers are placed in various areas throughout the hospital and under continual supervision by Grady staff, help with tasks ranging from administrative work to customer service. Volunteers will not shadow clinical staff or participate in direct patient care.

    3. Program: Emory University Pre-College Summer Program for High School Students

    Location: Atlanta, Georgia

    Description: It gives college-bound rising juniors and rising seniors an exciting glimpse of academic and residential life at a top-ranked national university. High school students may explore topics with professors who are the leading experts in their fields, enroll in classes with college students, and earn transferable college credit. Two-week non-credit courses, and six-week credit courses are available. Emory Pre-College students live together in a dorm on campus or within commuting distance with their families and participate in a variety of programs, activities, and excursions designed to prepare them for college.

    4. Program: Girls Who Code Summer Program for 11th and 12th Grade Girls 

    Location: Atlanta, Georgia 

    Description: Girls Who Code is a national non-profit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology. The programs goal is to educate, inspire, and equip girls to pursue opportunities in computing. The program is FREE for all participants! Each week, you’ll do a project related to a different aspect of computer science, such as robotics, mobile app development, and website development. You’ll also hear from guest speakers, go on field trips, and participate in hands-on workshops.

    5. Program: Department of Human Services: Youth Empowerment Series

    Location: Atlanta, Georgia 

    Description: DHS YES is an opportunity for Georgia youth to experience change and create impact. The group will consist of up to 50 students from around the state of Georgia who will grow alongside each other throughout the school year. DHS YES members are expected to work hard alongside their peers for the common good of their community. DHS YES events are mandatory as they are critical to achieving the mission of the program. Each gathering will be different, engaging, productive and fun!

    6. Program: UGA Accounting Residency Program

    Location: University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia

    Description: This program is designed to provide exceptional high school students an overview of the many career opportunities in the accounting profession and a brief introduction of business. ARP students will attend instructional sessions during the day, with fun activities scheduled in the evenings. The daytime sessions will provide insights into career opportunities in accounting and related fields through panel discussions with national and regional accounting firms and representatives from industry groups and government agencies. Students also get to sample "college life" by lodging in UGA residence halls, eating in the university’s award-winning dining halls, and attending lectures by UGA professors.

    7. Program: Mercer's Digital Media Summer Camp

    Location: Mercer Univerisity, Macon Georgia

    Description:  This program is designed to provide content for a web-based publication, Hone your writing & photography skills, improve your social media usage, try your hand at radio & video, work with professional editors & reporters. If you are a high school student interested in telling compelling stories through photo, video, audio, and the written word this camp is for you. You won't spend your time cooped up in a classroom; you'll get out into the community, practicing new skills with professionals guiding you. We'll also have many fun activities (this is camp, after all). In eight days, campers learn or improve their knowledge of, and skills in, DSLR cameras, Premiere, Photoshop, Audition, writing for the web and more. They interview real people to tell their story in a compelling multimedia format and publish the results.

    8. Program: Upward Bound Math Science Southeastern Regional Institute

    Location: Morehouse College Atlanta, GA

    Description:  The Morehouse College Upward Bound Math/Science Regional Center is designed to provide 78 eligible students an intensive six-week summer curriculum to students currently enrolled in high school throughout the southeast region of the United States. This program assists students to develop critical thinking, scientific, analytical skills, and effective expressions. Students will be given the opportunity to work in various labs and get hands-on computer experience. Students will be given exposure to a variety of science, math and engineering careers. Students also will experience innovative instructional methodologies. Students will take classes in Math, Technical Writing, a range of Laboratory Sciences, Computers, and Latin. Students will conduct research at various lab sites throughout the southeastern region.
