There are 3 parts to your summer reading assignment:

Read the book.

Complete the guided reading questions:

Create a google doc or word document and answer at least 3 questions from each chapter(s)- as they are listed on the page, ex. Chapters 8-9 are together (you should end up with 24 answered questions).

Make sure each chapter is labeled and record the number you are answering.

Work should be typed.

Complete 4 assignments from the choice board.

Choose one assignment from each ROW (difficulty level), and one from each COLUMN (learning style) for a TOTAL OF FOUR (4) ASSIGNMENTS.

This assignment will count as a test grade during the first 9 weeks of the school year. Your work must be EXCEPTIONALLY neat and insightful for full credit.

All writing assignments MUST BE TYPED (Times New Roman, 12 point, double-spaced, black ink, white paper ONLY).

For ALL writing assignments, hand write a “100” above each 100 words as they are reached.

Choose 3 unfamiliar vocabulary words from each chapter. Write the word, a definition, and then use the word in a sentence (do not use the sentence in which the word appears in the novel). (Must be typed)
Write a three paragraph essay (minimum of 8 sentences per paragraph) either agreeing or disagreeing with the statement, “The individual is more important than the group.” Explain why you feel the way your do and give detailed support for your answer. (Must be typed)
Explain the meaning or symbolism of Equality and Liberty’s names. Why do you think Rand chose the names that she did? Explain the meaning of the names and why they were chosen. Write a 350 word response that addresses ALL SIX NAMES given the characters. (Must be typed)
Relate, in journal form, a time when you were in the minority. How did you react? Or, relate a time when you conformed to fit the rest of the group. Write a 350 word response. (Must be typed)

Create a plot structure chart of the story (not a list). Include the exposition (setting and characters), rising action (minimum of 20 events), climax, falling action, and resolution. Label the events of the story according to their place on the chart. Do this on poster board.
Write a letter from Equality to Liberty in which he explains how he is feeling about her and his situation. Liberty has just seen Equality and does not know her name yet. Make sure to use the same language that Equality would use (“we”). (350 words—must be typed)
Create a 3-column chart and compare and contrast our society with the Anthem society. Choose a third society (Communism, Amish, etc.), and compare it as well. You can compare gender roles, laws, customs, etc. Provide 6 points of comparison in each chart. (Must be typed)
Through an art medium (drawing, painting, etc.), depict the change of Equality from the beginning of the novel to the end. Did he change? If so, how?

In a chart format, place the occupations or roles in the society in order of importance from the least to most. Include a brief description of the duties and which of the characters fit under these categories. A minimum of 7 jobs must be included. (Must be typed)
How would you feel if you lived in a society like Equality's? What would you do if you were in his situation? Write 3 diary entries as if you were living in such a society. Each entry must be a minimum of 8 sentences in length. (Must be typed)

Problematic Situation
You have been condemned for an unpardonable sin by your society. If you remain, you will be killed. Seeing no alternative, you decide to flee to the Uncharted Forest. No one has left the city and made it back alive. You do not know how long you will have to be gone, but deep down you know that you will never return. You hope that you will survive and ultimately live as you wish.
Since you only have a few moments to escape, select the 3 items from the list that you would want to bring with you on your escape. After selecting these items, rate them from 1 to 3, with 1 being the most important and 3 the least important. List your responses under the "My Choices" column.

ASSIGNMENT:
