  • The Internet is one of the greatest tools on the planet for enhancing student learning. A wealth of information is waiting to be devoured by hungry minds. However, it can also be a dangerous place.  Modeling and helping students learn about Internet safety is the responsibility of every adult in our students' lives, including teachers in all subject areas and parents at home. As adults learn more about wise online behavior and build awareness of our own digital footprints, we must continue to share and openly discuss these issues with the young people in our classrooms and homes.  Below you will find some resources to educate yourself and your students about how to be better and safer users of the World Wide Web.

    Common Sense Media has lesson plans that cover a wide variety of topics related to Digital Citizenship. From this page, you can search cross-curricular units that address digital literacy and citizenship topics in grade appropriate ways.     Webonauts Internet Academy is a web original game for PBS KIDS GO! that gives kids 8- to 10-year-old an opportunity to have some fun while exploring what it means to be a citizen in a web-infused‚ information-rich world. It is an engaging experience on its own but becomes all the more powerful when parents and teachers use game play as a springboard for conversations about media literacy and citizenship in the 21st Century.

    3rd-8th Grade 
     
    FBI-SOS is a free, fun, and informative program that promotes cyber citizenship by educating students in third to eighth grades on the essentials of online security. For teachers, the site provides a ready-made curriculum that meets state and federal Internet safety mandates, complete with online testing and a national competition to encourage learning and participation.  The FBI-SOS website features six islands—one for each grade level—with age appropriate games, videos, and other interactive materials in various portals. The site covers such topics as cell phone safety, the protection of personal information, password strength, instant messaging, social networking, and online gaming safety. The videos include real-life stories of kids who have faced cyber bullies and online predators.

    These Digital Citizenship modules are provided by Georgia Virtual Learning, a division from the GaDOE. Students and teachers can work their way through the Respect, Connect and Protect modules to learn more about being responsible 21st Century learners.
