  •  Highlights

The following school highlights are just a few of the things that make McDonough High School an amazing place to learn and grow! These four items should allow you to see the rigorous learning, diverse experiences, and supportive culture that exists in our school. In Henry County Schools, we believe in giving every student a high quality, world-class education and we believe these highlights display our passion and commitment to do just that.

    MHS picAP Honor Recognition
McDonough High continues our mission to create and sustain a culture of learning and a community of achievers as evidenced by our recognition as a GADOE AP Honor School for the second year in a row in 2021. Our AP test takers scored a 3 or higher on their AP exams at a rate of 52% in 2020, which was a 30% gain over the previous year. We are so proud to watch our Warhawks soar as they take on the challenges of rigorous coursework and receive accolades for their achievements. The 2019-2020 school also ended on a high note for the first graduating class of McDonough High School as the Class of 2020 achieved a 4-year cohort graduation rate of 87.29% which was an increase of 2.18% over the previous years. These accomplishments are the results of hard work by our students and the focus of our faculty to create quality instruction on a daily basis.
The continual collaborative efforts of our faculty, staff, students, and community to create a culture of learning will in no doubt allow our students to achieve at levels they have never dreamed of. We started this school year with a quote that rings true every day in the halls of McDonough High School “If not us, who? If not now, when?”.

    MHS picStudent Opportunities
At McDonough High School, our mission is to empower life-long learners who can contribute to the global world. We understand the importance of not only providing students with high-quality instruction but also with multiple opportunities to prepare them for life after high school. At MHS, those students who desire the challenge of more rigorous instruction may push themselves by enrolling in Advanced Placement courses to earn college credits. We currently offer AP courses in US History, Calculus, and Art, and plan to schedule more course offerings next school year. MHS is also grooming future leaders by offering those students who want to procure or polish their leadership skills the opportunity to become a part of the school’s Student Government Association.

These future world-changers learn real-world skills related to the democratic process, collaboration, project planning, and advocacy. In order to ensure all Warhawk graduates are college and career-ready, our students are afforded the opportunity to participate in Work-Based Learning, urged to take various Fine Arts courses, and are encouraged to apply to the Governor's Honors program. This year, MHS scholar Joey Hernandez rose to become an alternate for the Georgia State GHP in the area of Agricultural Science. Eligible students may also participate in the school's Beta Club or be invited to join an Honor Society. In addition to these in-school opportunities, our counselors also urge students to seek early college acceptance and make sure students are aware of the many scholarship offerings available to them. Students who take advantage of the many available opportunities will leave MHS as well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on the world!

    MHS picConnection with Stakeholders
McDonough High School strives to work in conjunction with all stakeholders to foster a positive learning community and provide the necessary resources to be successful. McDonough High School has been fortunate to receive the Get Game Ready Grant from the Shaquille O'Neal foundation for the 2020-2021 school year, as well as numerous donations and partnerships with local businesses in Henry County. These partnerships allow us to not only provide beneficial resources for our students, but also allows us to recognize and celebrate the hard work of our faculty and staff. Every year, McDonough High School acknowledges a teacher that has gone above and beyond for their students, and for the 2019-2020 school year that teacher was Michelle Watson. Mrs. Watson exemplifies the spirit of a MHS Warhawk. She consistently takes students under her wings and provides them with opportunities and supports that lead them to new heights.

McDonough High School takes pride in showcasing the dedication of our students to go above and beyond. Seniors who secured post-secondary opportunities participated in a Senior Drive-by Lunch to highlight their achievements while in school and to congratulate them on their decision to continue to exceed expectations.

    MHS pic Competitive Success
The scholars at McDonough High participate in many opportunities that extend beyond the classroom and allow students to compete at the state and national level. For example, NJROTC won the 2021 GA NAV CUP Interscholastic National Championship, the Art Club students served the community through the Empty Bowls Project, and our boys’ basketball team reached the final four of the GHSA state playoffs.

These successes demonstrate the drive of our student body and faculty towards achieving excellence. McDonough High School consistently builds a culture of leadership and achievers who serve their community and excel both in and outside of the classroom.

    • Literacy Proficiency Rates

The Georgia Student Health Survey is given to all k-12 students in Georgia in the spring of each school year. It is composed of a variety of questions that help our district better understand the student experience in our schools. The literacy information is calculated as the percentage of students reading on or above grade level determined by scores on the Milestones End-of-grade assessments for 9th grade Literature and American Literature. The 4-year cohort graduation rate is also displayed on this dashboard. Each of these data components can be viewed for the previous three years. For more information about these measurements, please access the McDonough High School website.
