• Students with disabilities served through special education have specialized learning needs that require collaborative efforts between the school and parents or guardians to ensure successful outcomes. Sometimes, students experience life events that result in no parent or guardian being available to assist with educational planning or decision making. Examples include when a child is in foster care, is a ward of the state, or when no parent can be identified. In these cases, the district must identify a Surrogate Parent to assist the school team in making appropriate decisions for the student. If you are interested in serving as a Surrogate Parent, please attend one of the upcoming virtual training sessions offered by the ESE Department:
