Course Outline and Content:

Unique Learning Curriculum: Unique Learning includes comprehensive activities for five core competencies:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Vocational Curriculum- Students participating in the Community Based Vocational Instruction program (CBVI) work in school based settings and at job sites throughout the year according to I.E.P. goals and objectives and grade level.  Students are given a numerical grade based on data collected by teacher, para-pro or job coach.  Digital pictures are taken on job sites and a portfolio is created for each student.

Community Based Curriculum-Community Based Instruction (CBI) trips will occur monthly.  The students will participate according to requirements specified in the IEP. Students travel into the community with a teacher and/or paraprofessional.  Community calendar for the term and permission forms for each trip will be sent home in the communication folder.  Permission forms must be signed and returned in order for students to participate.  CBI is not a field trip!  While in the community, students practice managing personal finances, utilizing the dollar-up method of payment, shopping and locating departments and items.  Money for CBI should be sent in on the day of instruction.  Students should carry their money in a predetermined envelope, purse, or wallet.  Upon returning to the classroom, students read receipts, count back change and fill out Community Based Instruction worksheet.  Data is collected on each CBI session and grades are based on a numerical grade.

In the classroom- Community Based Instruction functional academics include; Market, Menu, Grocery, Department and Drug store math in workbooks and on the computer.  Students also generate shopping list and practice “dollar up” method.  Sales flyers and coupons are reviewed to discuss comparative shopping.

Self-Management-skills include morning calendar, agenda training, food prepreation, personal hygiene, health and safety.  Task analysis sheets are designed for each individual student according to goals and objectives.   Grading on self-management is based on task analysis completion.

Recreation/Leisure - In the classroom, rec/leisure academics include goals and objectives from Special Olympics fusion charts and Team Sports (P.E).  Students also learn to follow directions, taking turns and understanding rules of sports.

Academically based board games, computer games, read for leisure, projects, and other high school age appropriate activities can be chosen by the student as well.

Grades-IEP Progress Reports for student goals and objectives will sent home each grading period along with the student grade report from the school/county.
