Inquiry & Depth of Knowledge (DOK)
What is Depth of Knowledge (DOK) & Inquiry?
Depth of Knowledge (DOK) is a way to think about increasing rigor for students learning. The focus is on content complexity, not content difficulty. Tasks are categorized according to the complexity of thinking required to successfully complete them.
Inquiry is a form of active learning that starts by posing questions, problems or scenarios—rather than simply presenting established facts or portraying a smooth path to knowledge. The process is facilitated by the teacher.
*Mt. Carmel's goal is to move students beyond simple recall (Level 1) and skill/concept application (Level 2) Depth of Knowledge (DOK) tasks and toward strategic reasoning (Level 3) and extended reasoning tasks (Level 4). We believe excellent, intentional, and proven instructional practices will include rigourous and engaging learning opportunities for our students.
