Commonly Asked Tennis Questions.....
Q. When are high school tennis try-outs and how many make the team?A. Tennis try-outs begin on January 27th, 2025. We have JV BOYS & GIRLS (8th, 9th, 10th, & 11th) and VARSITY BOYS & GIRLS (9th, 10th, 11th, & 12th). We keep 9-10 players on JV and 8-9 on varsity, depending on talent level. In order to try-out, everyone must have completed physical, insurance, parent consent forms, sudden cardiac arrest awareness form, concussion & heat forms on Aktivate, and be academically eligible. Conditioning will start on January 13, 2025 from 4:00-5:15 P.M.Q. Do I need to have any tennis experience?A. Yes, it is highly recommended. The varsity team is competitive. We are looking for players who give us the best chance to compete, win, and represent Union Grove High School well. The junior varsity team is less experienced. We look for potential, athleticism (multi-sport), and playing ability in these players....those who give us a chance to be successful in the future.Q. What will tryouts consist of?A. For returning players (JV & Varsity).....match play. You will play four games total. You will receive a point for each game won. The coaches will look at the win/loss percentage. If you don't have playing experience, we look at athleticism while you do various drills. That's not all! We also take other things into consideration: strong doubles players, work ethic, hustle, attitude, how you get along with other people on the team, etc.Q. How much does it cost to play high school tennis?A. There is an (#1) athletic fee that every student-athlete must pay. The athletic fee is $40. This is due by March 21, 2025. This is a one time payment. If your child played a fall sport and has already paid, you don't make another payment. There is also a (#2) tennis fee, which goes to help with tennis expenses. The tennis fee is $200. The tennis fee is due the day of our parent informational meeting, which will be held some time in late January. The tennis fee INCLUDES the cost of the uniform, which is around $90. There will also be "spirit wear".....t-shirts and hoodies.Q. How long is the season?A. The season can last 3 1/2 months or longer, depending on how successful we are. The season runs from January 27-May 10, 2025 for VARSITY. The JV season is from January 27-March 31, 2025.Q. How will transportation be handled for this season?
A. VARSITY matches will use players and parents for transportation to matches. JV matches will use parents for transportation to matches. We do not use busses.
Q. When are practices?A. Monday-FridayVarsity: 3:40-4:55 P.M.JV: 5:00-6:00 P.M.Q. Any additional information I need to know?A. You will need your own tennis racket. You will need to have a great attitude and the ability and willingness to work hard.If you make the team, you must be committed! That means missing out on certain things that would interfere with the tennis season (ex. field trips, dentist appointments, vacations, etc.).
