Chris McMichen is the Director of Choral Activities and Fine Arts Department Chairman at Union Grove High School in Henry County. Before opening Union Grove HS in 2000, Mr. McMichen served as choral director at Mount Zion High School in Clayton County for three years and at Riverdale High School for four years. He was selected as Riverdale High School’s STAR Teacher of the Year in 1996, Teacher of the Year in 1997 and Union Grove High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2005. He also won a Rising Star Teacher of the Year Award in 2006. He has conducted high school choral groups at various invitational festivals in cities including New York, Washington, New Orleans, Orlando, San Antonio, Myrtle Beach, San Diego and Toronto. Choirs under Mr. McMichen’s direction have been featured on programs with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Tara Winds, and Southern Crescent Symphony. His Chorus students have had impressive individual successes as members of the GMEA District 6 Honor Chorus, All-State Chorus, All-State Reading Chorus, Governor’s Honors Program, and ACDA National and Divisional Honor Choruses. Several vocal soloists and small ensembles under his direction have won first place in Regional and State Literary Meet events. He served as the Musical Director for the Clayton County All-Star musical from 1996-2000. Mr. McMichen earned his Bachelor of Music degree with honors from the University of South Carolina in 1993 and completed his Master of Music Education degree from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, Virginia in 2000. He is an active member of GMEA, MENC, ACDA, and the Phi Mu Alpha professional music fraternity. He has been extremely active in leadership roles with GMEA, serving as State Choral Chair, District 6 Chair, and as the Organizing Chair of All-State Choruses, District 6 Honor Choruses, and District 6 Festival/LGPE. He also serves as a statewide adjudicator for GMEA LGPE and GHSA Literary Meet events. Mr. McMichen also founded the GMEA All-State Reading Chorus that rehearses and performs at the GMEA In-Service Conference each January.
In addition to his vocal work, Mr. McMichen is an accomplished percussionist who played with the Tara Winds Community Band for ten years. He performs frequently throughout the metro Atlanta area. He has accompanied numerous GMEA District 6 Honor Choruses and All-State Choruses on percussion. He served as a percussion instructor with the Encore! Music summer camp for Middle School students for 12 years. Mr. McMichen is also an accomplished Pit Orchestra conductor, having conducted orchestras for over 15 musicals. Mr. McMichen alsocurrently serves as the Minister of Music & Arts at Salem Baptist Church here in McDonough.
