Role of the School Counselor

School counselors are state certified personnel who assist students in the areas of academic achievement, college/career and social/emotional development. School counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and promote the development of the comprehensive school counseling program. Counseling interventions are based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess (adapated from ASCA; ASCA Role Statement)
School Counselors are not mental health counselors/therapist, and do not provide therapy. However if these services are needed, the school counselor may assist with locating referral resources.
Our Roles as a School Counselor
- Individual student advisement, academic planning, and goal-setting
- School counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
- Short-term counseling to students (Brief, Solution-Focused)
- Small group counseling on a variety of topics
- Referrals for long-term support
- Collaboration with families/teachers/ administrators/ community for student success
- Advocacy for students at student-focused meetings
- Data analysis to identify student issues, needs and challenges
