Role of the School Counselor

  • What is a School Counselor

School counselors are state certified personnel who assist students in the areas of academic achievement, college/career and social/emotional development. School counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and promote the development of the comprehensive school counseling program. Counseling interventions are based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess (adapated from ASCA; ASCA Role Statement)

School Counselors are not mental health counselors/therapist, and do not provide therapy. However if these services are needed, the school counselor may assist with locating referral resources.
