• NHS Selection Procedure Description

The National Honor Society chapter of Union Grove High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students are selected for membership by a five-member faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.

10th through 12th grade students that have attended UGHS for a minimum of one semester and have a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.8 are eligible to apply for membership.  Each Spring semester, those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

For information on transferring membership from another school, visit the NHS site for detailed information: https://www.nhs.us

In order for the student to be evaluated regarding service and leadership, he or she is asked to complete a Candidate Form.  A history of leadership experience and participation in school or community service is required.

Below you will find a description of the criteria used for selection purposes.

    Selection Criteria

Students qualify on the basis of the following four criteria limited to their high school years.

Deficiency in any one of the four criteria results in non-selection.  Invitation to apply for membership in no way guarantees or confers selection/membership.

Scholarship: Candidates eligible for election to the chapter should have a minimum unweighted cumulative weighted GPA of 3.8.

Service: This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.  The student needs to be well rounded with participation in extra-curricular activities in the school and in the community. This should be demonstrated by volunteering cheerfully and enthusiastically to give one’s services to the school, community and classroom.

Leadership: The student should have held leadership positions such as a club or student government chairmanship, band squad leader, sports team captain, or managerial work, in DIFFERENT school or community organizations - not tied to class credit.  Leadership should have an established pattern of the student seeking and carrying out leadership responsibilities over an extended period of time, as opposed to an ad hoc event.

Character: Members should be of good character.  They are cooperative; demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintain a clean disciplinary record, which will be reviewed periodically.

    Completing the Candidate Form:

For each role you list, also describe the specifics of what you did, for how long, etc, to help you meet the standard of completing the form.

Parents cannot verify activities unless they are/were sponsors of those activities AND INCLUDE SEPARATE DOCUMENTATION (organization letterhead is recommended), otherwise, your form will not be counted as complete.

List the grade (9th, 10th, 11th) of your involvement for each activity (including senior year).

You will not be given credit for any activity that has not been verified by the sponsor, so include the sponsor’s contact info.

Please be forthright and honest on the Candidate Form.  Inaccuracies misrepresenting alleged qualifications result in non-selection.  Please ask the sponsor – PRIOR TO THE DUE DATE – if you have any questions about how to complete the form.  We are here to help.

Incomplete forms will not be considered.

Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection once the faculty advisory committee has met and reviewed all student applications.

    Non-selection

A student who is not selected may only appeal to the faculty advisory committee for the following reasons:

    1) if a procedural error, such as a name left off the list in error

     or

     2) a mistake was made in calculating the grade average.

The chapter sponsor, the principal, and the committee members are not obligated to share any specific information regarding the non-selection of a student. Failure to accord an honor is not a deprivation of a right.
