What is RTI/SST?

RTI is a process designed to help schools match student needs to research-based interventions.  Student progress is monitored on a frequent basis. When teacher given interventions are not working on Tier 2, students are moved to Tier 3 (SST) where school personnel along with parents work together to develop intensive interventions that are done more frequently.  The Student Support team will use data collected to make decisions regarding the student’s educational program.

What’s the difference between RTI and MTSS?

In Henry County, the term MTSS (Multi-tiered system of supports) is used.  However, this term and system is the same as RtI (Response to Intervention).  The two terms are used interchangably to describe the process used to provide support when students are struggling behaviorally or academically. 

What are the benefits of RTI?

The RTI approach allows for early help or support within the general education setting.  Through school-wide screening, progress monitoring, and teacher input, students are identified and interventions are put into place to address learning needs.

What if my child is referred to the school’s Student Support Team (SST)?

• Attend team meetings.  Remember, you are the expert of your child!

• Ask what interventions are being used for academic and/or behavioral problems.

• Ask what techniques are being used to monitor student progress.

• Ask your school to provide you with regular progress monitoring reports.

• Praise your child for any progress or general improvement in the area(s) of concern.

• Implement or reinforce any strategies or interventions at home.

• When possible, make suggestions for strategies or interventions based on what you know works well at home.

• Always ask questions when things are not clear!

• Your consent is required for the school to evaluate or implement special services.
