This Is Water! - David Foster Wallace
I believe that the real purpose and value of education lies in being able to determine what has meaning in our life.
This is an excerpt of a speech from one of my favorite authors, David Foster Wallace, during a commencement address at Kenyon College in 2005.
I encourage you to watch it (the link is below and it is only 9:22) so you can gain insight into how and why I teach you or your child. I designed my philosophy around this speech.
Furthermore, I have designed my philosophy around a quote by another of my favorite authors, James Baldwin.
"The paradox of education is precisely this -- that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated." - James Baldwin
I want all of my students to ask questions. I want them to question me, to question their friends, to question the world around them. Being able to examine the world around them, as Baldwin mentions, is the result of a genuine education, though a paradox it may be. I hope I can instill the confidence in all of my students to ask questions and to seek for themselves the Truth they desire.
