FAQ regarding 6th Grade Orchestra
DO I NEED TO ALREADY BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC OR PLAY AN INSTRUMENT?
No, 6th grade is the beginning point for Orchestra in Henry County! Therefore, classes will begin by learning the basics of reading and counting rhythms, music reading, and introductory music vocabulary.
DO I NEED TO ALREADY HAVE AN INSTRUMENT?
No, I will assist your child in selecting an instrument and will provide you with all the information necessary for you to rent or purchase the appropriate instrument and materials for your child during the first two weeks of school. This will give your child an adequate amount of time to select the instrument he/she would like to learn to play and will give the parent time to secure a suitable instrument.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE INSTRUMENT SELECTION PROCESS?
After demonstrating and teaching students the basics of the four string instruments, the students will be allowed to experiment on each one to find the instrument that suits them best. It is extremely important that each student selects an instrument on which he/she will have the best chance of being successful. I will also need to make sure the classes are balanced in terms of instrumentation so that all parts will be covered and there won’t be too many students on any one given instrument. Either I or a local music store will provide you with the correct size instrument for your child. The four string instruments are violin, viola, cello, and bass.
WHAT IF MY CHILD ALREADY PLAYS OR IF WE ALREADY HAVE AN INSTRUMENT?
If your child has started private lessons or is coming from another school system where he/she has already begun playing an instrument in orchestra, he/she may continue to play that instrument, or you may choose to have them begin again on another instrument. If you have already secured an instrument for your child to play, please let me know ASAP in order to avoid any confusion.
OK, WHAT ABOUT…?
Orchestra is a year-long class that will take place during one of your child’s two Connections Classes. Your child may choose to remain in the Orchestra until they graduate and will also be eligible to participate in athletic teams starting in the 7th grade, if they like.
