11 Alive's Report on our Chinese Dual Immersion Program (Fall 2014)
11 Alive staff made a visit to DES just before the Thanksgiving break to learn more about the CDIP classes. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for a Global Workforce. Students in kindergarten and first grade are learning math and science immersed in Mandarin Chinese. Other subjects are taught in English with support provided as students need it. North Carolina School Adds Mandarin Chinese to Its Dual Immersion Program
A North Carolina elementary school this fall will add Mandarin Chinese to its language-immersion program, which already includes instruction in Spanish. Plans call for teaching kindergarten through second-grade students entirely in Mandarin Chinese, and third- through fifth-grade students in both Mandarin and English. Catch the television interview with Dr. Johnson and Mrs. Moss!
Just before beginning the first year of Chinese Dual Immersion at Dutchtown Elementary, WSB Channel 15 Community Spotlight television show took some time to share in the excitement of the new program. In this video, you will hear Dr. Johnson, the educational leader that had the vision for the program and principal of Dutchtown, explain how the students will be immersed in the language as well as describe how she was able to obtain a local teacher to help implement the Mandarin Chinese portion. You will also hear from Mrs. Moss as she describes her excitement as well as the preparation that has taken place to ensure the program's success.
