Mrs. Charlena Raines
Hello and welcome students and parents.
Let me take a few moments to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in the Conyers/Covington area. I had a natural aptitude for math and science throughout my primary education. In middle school, I was selected to be a peer tutor in my math class and realized that I was good at (and enjoyed) teaching and tutoring other students with skills I had mastered. As a senior in high school, I had an opportunity to participate in a teacher cadet course where I worked with a middle school math class and a third-grade class. The teacher cadet course and my experience as a job class trainer (with Publix Supermarkets) further fueled my desire to become a teacher.
After high school, I got married, started my post-secondary education at Georgia Perimeter College, and later transferred to the University of Georgia to finish my degree. I'm proud to say that I graduated Magna Cum Laude from UGA with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Education with a Chemistry focus. Since then I have further continued my education by getting my gifted in-field and an AP Chemistry certifications.
My husband and I have two active young adult children (Mina (22) & Ashley (20)) who recently gained full-time employment. Mina graduated from UGA with a degree in mechanical engineering in May 2024 and Ashley is working as an electrical helper while attending IEC. We live in Covington and have three dogs (blue healer, shepherd mix, and hound mix) that were all pound adoptions and 3 cats as part of our family.
I have been teaching in the Henry County School System since 2010, and I have the pleasure of teaching AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, General Chemistry, Physical Science, and Environmental Science. I want to instill in my students a greater appreciation for science and an improved understanding of how our lives are impacted by chemistry. I will challenge my students to question their prior conceptions and encourage them to explore new information with a scientific mind.
