American Government Classes

  • I will teach three 'American Government' periods a day (2nd, 3rd, 5th). This is a semester-long class that splits the other semester with Economics. Please keep in mind this being a shortened course means grades will have a greater weight. You WILL need this class to graduate.

'American Government' is designed to provide students with a comprehensive, intensive study of our nation’s system of government and how it came into being.  Students begin with a study of the concepts of government, earliest philosophies that influenced our government, founding documents, the structure of our government, civil rights & liberties, campaigns & elections, and concepts of state & local government. Discussions, debates, and projects will be a key part of the class. We move beyond WHO, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE to answering HOW and WHY.

Students will also be expected to keep a current events journal where they will select relevant news stories relating to class topics and analyze them. We will hold class discussions based on these topics:

Topics include: types of government, founding documents, three branches of government, civil rights & liberties, campaigns & elections, and state & local government. All lessons and materials will be posted online in Google Classroom.

NOTE: This class curriculum is based on the Henry County Teaching & Learning Standards. All information covered in class is based on county and state standards. Any questions about what is taught in class can be directed to myself or Administration. Discussions may involve perspectives on various ideas and political beliefs. Discussions are intended to be fair & respectful with an understanding that each student holds their own personal views based on life experiences and influences. Students will understand that others may have different views & to respect those different views with civil discussion.

We have a ZERO MOBILE PHONE policy during class. This includes Airpods, earbuds, & other accoutrements connected to mobile devices. We ask that both students & parents respect this. We have your students 50 minutes each day. If there is an emergency, you may call the main office or send your student an email to reach them during class.
