• Welcome parents and students!
I am Coach Phillips.   I have been teaching at Hickory Flat since January 2002.  I taught 4th grade for the first 7 years at HFE and have been fortunate enough to have the greastest job ever (teaching PE) ever since. This year, as we all know, is going to be a little different than in the past. Remote teaching and learning is something that we are all going to have to work through, but I am confident we will not only get through it, but be better because of it!  I look forward to the challenge and I hope that PE will be a time of fun and learning for you and your family while at home.
I will be posting links to websites that will be fun and interactive ways to get you moving!  These dances, exercises, and activities are great ways to get your heart rate up and your muscles pumping while at home.  Parents, please have your child pick a few activities to do daily and if possible join in with them. It is recommended that children ages 6-17 years do 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.
Please click on the links to the left to access our remote learning PE activities.  Thanks for joining in and HAVE FUN!!!

Your mouth, also known as the human oral microbiome, contains more bacteria than the amount of people in the world. Just think about that, there are more than 7.5 billion people on Earth.  Remember, not all bacteria is bad.  Our bodies depend on some bacterias to function and be healthy.

     ---------------
    Blood Vessels:
According to the U.S National Institute of Aging, if you were to lay out all of the arteries, capillaries and veins in one adult, end-to-end, they would stretch about 60,000 miles.  That is more than two times around the earth.  The Earth's circumference is 24,901 miles. The capillaries, which are the smallest of the blood vessels, would make up about 80 percent of that length.

     ----------------
    Bones
There are 206 bones in the adult human body.  However, when we are born, we have around 270 bones.  Some of those bones fuse together as we get older.
Bones have many functions:  They support our body, they protect our vital organs, and while working together with the muscular system, they allow us to move.  They also act as a storage place for minerals that our bodies need.

    Water... agian...
Drinking plenty of water is good for your body and essential for your health! Here are a few reasons why:
    It lubricates the joints
It delivers oxygen throughout the body
It cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues
    It regulates body temperature
The digestive system depends on it and It flushes body waste
    It boosts performance during exercise
So put down the sugary drinks and make sure you are drinking plenty of water!

    The Great Outdoors:

BEING OUTDOORS BOOSTS YOUR ENERGY AND YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.

IT FEELS EASIER TO EXERCISE OUTDOORS.

IT IS GOOD FOR YOUR VISION.

    GOING OUTSIDE CAN ENHANCE CREATIVITY.

BEING OUTDOORS GIVES YOU YOUR DAILY DOSE OF VITAMIN D.

Ask your parents to go outside today!!!

    ----------------

    Exercise!
    -Helps you lose weight
    -Improves your mood
    -Gives you more energy
    -Helps you sleep better
-Reduces your risk of heart diseases
    -Strengthens your bones
    -Strengthens your muscles
-Increases your chances of living longer!

     -----------------------------

Would you want to be as strong as an ant?
    Ants are strong...really, really strong!
An ant can lift between 10-100 times its own weight.
The asian weaver ant can lift up to 100 times its own mass.
Although not possible, if a human could lift the same amount as the asian weaver ant, we would be able to pick up a car,a truck, or maybe even an elephant.
    That would be awesome!

    HAIR...

The average person has 100,000 – 150,000 strands of hair.

On average, you shed around 50-150 strands of hair a day.

A healthy strand of hair can stretch an additional 30% when it’s wet.

A strand of hair is stronger than a copper wire with the same diameter.  Wow, that is strong!!!

When we are cold or scared, goosebumps happen when the muscle for each hair strand contracts.

    --------------
    Juice:
Yes, 100% fruit juice is a great source of nutrients like Vitamin C and Potassium.  However, too much pure juice can also be a a source of extra sugar and calories your body doesn't need.  If you have the option, eating the whole fruit is better for you.  When you eat the whole fruit, you are consuming the dietary fiber from the fruit's pulp and skin which makes the fruit even healthier.
Ex:  1 orange = about 8-10 grams of sugar
1 16 oz orange juice = about 40-45 grams of sugar
1 16 oz coke  =  41 gram of sugar     YIKES!!!
Children should only consume about 25 grams of added sugar each day.  That single glass of orange juice is almost twice the daily limit.
Try eating the fruit rather than just drinking the juice!

    ---------------
    Nails...
Nails are made out of the same stuff as hair.
Nails grow faster in the summer than in the winter.
Your nails need blood to survive.
Men's nails tend to grow faster than womens.
Nail biting is called onychophagia, which is the most common "nervous habit".

    -----------------------------
-A can of soda contains 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. That’s 150 to 180 empty calories. Better to cut your thirst with some water or milk.
-Leafy green vegetables like broccoli and orange vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes are full of vitamins to keep you energized and help you play harder for longer.
-Fruit is much better than the juice! In fact, a raw unpeeled apple has almost 10 times more fiber than a cup of apple juice.

    ---------------------
    Bet you didn't know facts:
It is impossible for most people to lick their own elbow.
A shrimp's heart is in its head.
There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar.
Almonds are a member of the peach family.
A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.
Most people fall asleep in seven minutes.
A dime has 118 ridges around the edge.
If you don't believe me, look it up!

    Your Brain:
Your brain controls your thoughts, memory and speech, movement of the arms and legs, and the function of many organs within your body.
-The human brain weighs 3 pounds.
-It comprises 60% of fat and is one of the fattest organs in the human body.
-Human brain has the capacity to generate approximately 23 watts of power when awake.

    ------------------
    Water is Important!!!
Up to 60% of the human body is made up of water
Your brain and heart are composed of about 73% water
Your lungs are about 83% water
Your skin contains about 64% water
Your muscles and kidneys are about 79% water
Even your bones are watery: about 31% water     (USGS,org)

Push-ups are awesome!!! (although that may be an opinion)
The pushup may just be the perfect exercise that builds both upper-body and core strength. Done properly, it is a compound exercise that uses muscles in the chest, shoulders, triceps, back, abs, and even the legs. (verywellfit.com)
    Push-up records-
    - Rolf Heck from Germany executed 2,354 push-ups in 30 minutes
    - Alicia Weber did 829 push-ups in 30 minutes and 1020 push-ups in an hour. She also holds the world record for the most performed in 10 minutes – 450 push-ups.
    - Paul Lynch from Great Britain earned the world record for one-finger push-ups by doing 124 without stopping.

    SLEEP FACTS

-Your heart will be healthier if you get between 9 and 11 (ages 6-13) hours of sleep each night.
-A good night's sleep makes you feel energized and alert the next day.
-Deep sleep is a very important time for your brain to make memories and links, and getting more quality sleep will help you remember and process things better.
-Sleep is a time to relax, but it's also a time during which the body is hard at work repairing damage caused throughout the day.

     ------------------------------------------
-American adults consume an average of 77 grams of sugar per day, more than 3 times the recommended amount for women. This adds up to around 60 pounds of added sugar annually – that’s six, 10-pound bowling balls, folks!  https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating/eat-smart/sugar/how-much-sugar-is-too-much
-American kids consume 81 grams per day, equaling over 65 pounds of added sugar per year. Think of it this way – children are ingesting over 30 gallons of added sugars from beverages alone. That’s enough to fill a bathtub!

    ----------------------
-The small intestine is where most of the digestion process takes place.  It is responsible for absorbing of the nutrients and minerals from the food we eat.

-The small intestine in the average adult is about 22 feet long.  That is about 7-8 large steps for most of you.

    ---------------------
-Learning a new language or learning an instrument can give your brain a boost.
Just like all muscles, the brain needs to be exercised and cared for to ensure you are performing and feeling your best.

Your heart will beat about 115,000 times each day.
Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood every day. To put that into perspective, the average bathtub holds about 80 gallons of water. Therefore, your heart would have to pump the equivalent of 25 bathtub full.
