    Role of the School Counselor

Do you remember having a "guidance counselor" when you attended school? If so, you may be led to believe that "guidance counselors" and "school counselors" are the same. Over the years, the term "guidance counselor" was used to refer to counselors working in school. However, that term has evolved from guidance counselor to school counselor as the role of the counselor has evolved and changed. Counselors are no longer sitting waiting for a crisis to occur to support students. School counselors help all students in the areas of academic achievement, career and social/emotional development, ensuring today's students become productive citizens.  School counselors design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. The role of the school counselor is one of support, collaboration, leadership, and advocacy. School counselors work diligently in conjunction with parents, students, staff, and administrators to ensure students can achieve. School counselors review data to determine the needs of the students. We address students' needs through classroom lessons, individual and small group counseling and providing resources for community support.  For more information regarding the role of school counselors, please read the American School Counselor Association's article on The Role of the School Counselor.
