• Civics Club

The Woodland Middle School Civics Club strives to offer civic engagement opportunities to all students who are able to complete the work that is required to participate. Our Civics Club participates in three social studies/civic programs that have been developed by the State of Georgia, as well as nationally developed programs. They include: National History Day (Regional, State, & National), Model United Nations, and Junior Youth Assembly.

    National History Day

National History Day is comparable to the traditional state Social Studies Fair, however it offers extended opportunities for students to develop critical reading/writing/thinking skills, in addition to allowing students to develop projects based on interest and modality. Students may either write an historical paper, create a documentary, design and build a museum exhibit, design and build a website, or write and present a performance on a chosen topic that aligns with the chosen historical theme. Students with completed projects will participate in a district regional NHD competition, where selected projects will advance to the Georgia NHD competition and possibly the national NHD competition. There is no cost to participate, but may require parental investment for research and materials. There are three competitions:

    • Henry County District Regionals in February/March

    • State NHD at LaGrange College in April

    • National NHD at the UNiversity of Maryland, College Park (DMV/ Washington, D.C.) in June

No Cost to participate at Regionals, $10 at State, $150, at Nationals

Transportation and lodging to and from the contests is provided for the student if they advance to Nationals, teachers and parents are not covered.

    Georgia Model United Nations (GUNA)

Georgia Model United Nations (GUNA) is a program sponsored and designed by the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement. Students work collaboratively in groups to choose a country to represent, writing a resolution to be presented at the annual conference in February, and developing arguments for and against other resolutions presented at the conference. Students who agree to adhere to the requirements, and complete the activities necessary to attend the conference are invited to represent the WMS Model UN team. The team will meet during school, and once a week afterschool to prepare for the conference in February. There are costs connected to participating, and information about payment, scholarships, and fundraising opportunities will be communicated during the month of August.

    Junior Youth Assembly (JYA)

Junior Youth Assembly (JYA) is a program sponsored and designed by the Georgia Center for Civic Engagement.  Students actively learn about public policy and how a bill becomes a law in the Georgia General Assembly. Students choose a public policy of interest to them, and write a bill that they must defend at the annual Georgia JYA conference in October. If a student’s bill is chosen to be debated at the conference, they will write an argumentative speech in support of the bill to read in committee and the general sessions. Students who write bills that are not accepted to debate at conferences still attend to help defend and debate bills written by the WMS team members. All students will be expected to defend or oppose bills submitted by other students at the conference, as the competition evaluates our entire team. Students who agree to adhere to the requirements and complete the activities necessary to attend the conference are invited to represent the WMS JYA team. The team will meet beginning in January during school, and once a week afterschool to prepare for the conference in October. There are costs connected to participating, and information about payment, scholarships, and fundraising opportunities will be communicated during the month of August.
