Bullying, as the term is defined in Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 20-2-751.4), is strictly prohibited. The Student Code of Conduct for all schools within the school system expressly prohibits bullying.
Bullying is defined as an act that is:
1. Any willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on another person, when accompanied by an apparent present ability to do so; or
2. Any intentional display of force such as would give the victim reason to fear or expect immediate bodily harm; or
3. Any intentional written, verbal, or physical act that a reasonable person would perceive as being intended to threaten, harass, or intimidate, that:
• causes another person substantial physical harm or visible bodily harm;
• has the effect of substantially interfering with a student's education;
• is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or,
• has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.
SCHOOL SAFETY HOTLINE
The Georgia Department of Education operates a School Safety Hotline as a resource to teachers, administrators, students and parents. The mission of the hotline is to “provide a safe and secure environment conducive to learning…” for every school community.
The hotline is toll-free and anonymous and can be reached by dialing 1-877-SAY-STOP (1-877-729-7867). An initiative of the Georgia Safety and Violence Task Force, this is the nation’s first state-sponsored school safety hotline.
COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL-AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY
If you or your student believe that a student is being bullied, please report it to a school staff member or administrator immediately.
