Dr. Courtney Hulsey
Dr. Courtney A. Hulsey
Director of Choruses
Dr. Hulsey has been a part of the WMS Wolfpack Family since January 2018. Throughout her career she has sung all over the country and been a featured soloist with the Pensacola Children’s Chorus, The Choral Society of Pensacola, and The Atlanta Women’s Chorus. She has also performed as a part of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, and has sung with the Gainseville Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Musicians Orchestra. Dr. Hulsey also has an extensive background in vocal competitions and state choral festivals. She is also the Minister of Music at a Methodist Church in Rockdale county.
She received her bachelor’s degree in Voice Performance, with an emphasis in opera, from Florida State University in 2004. In December of 2019, Dr. Hulsey received her master’s degree in Music Education (emphasis in choral curriculum for beginning choirs) from the University of Florida. She received her doctorate in Music Education (emphasis in Social Emotional Learning) from Liberty University in 2022.
As a part of the WMS staff, Dr. Hulsey is the Director of Choruses and has grown the program from 3 chorus classes to 7. Students in the choral program learn to sing properly with a focus on maintaining a healthy voice and posture. Students learn how to read music, recognize rhythms, movement, and repertoire that encompasses a variety of time spans, literary topics, and ethnic backgrounds. Students also learn stage presence, confidence, communication, and are engaged in social-emotional, student-centered learning.
Additionally, each spring, the choral department performs a musical. We have performed The Little Mermaid Jr. (2021), Dear Edwina (2022), Aladdin (2023). These opportunities provide students to use the knowledge and skills gained in their grade level classes (math, science, social studies, and ELA) with their love of music and theater.
Music (and the arts) provide all students with the opportunity of self-discovery and expression. My goal is to encourage everyone who enters my classroom to meet themselves and when they leave, to be better versions of themselves; more aware of the wisdom, compassion, and power they possess.
Quote: “What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.” (Paulo Freire)
