• Our History

The Stockbridge Middle School band program was created in 1984 by Mr. Ross Iddings and Mike Lynch.  Since its inception, the Stockbridge Band has had a long tradition of excellence, receiving Superior and Excellent ratings at the Georgia Music Educator's Association's Large Group Performance Evaluation each year.  In 1984, an amazing 25% of the school population were members of the band. Twenty five years later, even though the school population has diminished significantly, the band program still serves 20% of the total population of Stockbridge Middle School.

Past directors include Ross Iddings, Mike Lynch, Jennifer McCarthy, Travis Tingle, Matthew Price, Jessica Herndon, Dr. Robert Bryant, Mr. Shannon Feloss, Deon Williams, and Jordan Sorrell.  Over the years, students at Stockbridge have been fortunate enough to encounter some of the leading educators in the field of music.  They have worked with renowned music educators such as Kenny Beard, Tracy Wright, Ricky Williams, Robert Sheldon, Ed Davis, Lyn Pharris, and many others.

The Stockbridge Middle Band Program has participated in numerous music festivals throughout the Southeast.  The ensembles have performed at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Chattanooga, TN; Carowinds Music Festival in Charlotte, NC; and Your Instrument Music Festival in Orlando, FL. They received 1st place honors in both 2006 and 2007 at the Music USA Festival in Orlando, FL. They received 2nd place honors at the Music USA Music Festival held at Universal Studios, in Orlando, FL. In 2013, The SMS Symphonic Band will travel to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to particpate in the Trills and Thrills Music festival at Dollywood. Our students consistently represent Stockbridge Middle School Band at the GMEA District 6 Honor Band, All-State Band, the UGA Middle School Band Festival, and other regional honor ensembles.
