    Course Description:

The overall goal of personalized learning mathematics curriculum is to help students develop sound mathematical habits. Units have been developed in each domain as it pertains to the Mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence. It is desirable for students to keep the “big picture” in mind as we deal with specific goals in each unit.

By the end of grade six, learners will demonstrate Competency and 21st Century Skills regarding Georgia Standards of Excellence such as:  Numbers and Operations, Expressions and Equations, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry, and Statistics and  Probability. Throughout the course, students will enhance their problem solving skills by exploring real-world situations through Learning Zones and Project – Based Learning.

    Materials:

Our study of mathematics will be a wonderful and exciting journey, and as with any journey, it is a good idea to be prepared. Here are the items you are expected to bring to class everyday:  cromebook,  paper folder with pocket and prongs, paper, basic calculator, and pencils.  It is also suggested that you bring your own personal hand held pencil sharpener, color pencils, tape, highlighter, and dry erase marker.

    Grading Policy:

As defined by a school wide grading policy, the final grades for each semester will be calculated using the following percentages:

                     40%                Summative Assessment

                    40%              Formative Assessment

    20%                 Semester Exams

    Time Outside of Class:

Mathematics is learned by practice; therefore, you cannot expect to accomplish what you should from this course without spending some time with mathematics outside of class. As well as completing daily class work/homework assignments, you need to stay organized, spend time reviewing notes and assignments, carefully reflect on problems previously missed, etc.

    Personalized Mathematics Vision Statement:

The belief of the Luella Middle School Mathematics Department is to encourage middle school learners to develop and achieve confidence with mathematics, allowing them to compete at their personalized level of understanding and comprehension.

    Assessment Corrections:

Learners not meeting standards on a quiz or test will be allowed to correct it for partial credit. Learners will receive an Assessment Correction Form with a copy of their quiz or test and will be expected to complete it to raise their grade and build their knowledge.

    Late/Missing Work:

Late/Missing work will be accepted based on an agreed upon extension which can be one day to one week from original due date.

    Absences and/or Make-up Procedures:

When a student is absent, all missed work must be completed.  It is the student’s responsibility to consult with the teacher to make sure he or she is aware of all assignments. The time generally allowed to complete this work without a penalty will be the number of days the student was absent.  Upon return from an absence, the student must take the initiative to collect any missing assignments.
