Language Arts Skills
This page will be a resource for all the resources that are available as we cover various Language Arts skills in class or through activities. Please check back to use whatever is available as you complete your Interactive Notebook and study for assessments.
Parts of Speech
There are eight parts of speech that 6th graders are responsible for knowing. Since this is a language arts skill that was taught in elementary, we do not necessarily go back and specifically teach the parts of speech. We will use the parts of speech frequently in class and expect the learners to know and understand them. Please use the PowerPoint presentation below on the parts of speech to solidify information or clarify questions that may come up as we review and use the parts of speech in activities and lessons throughout the year.
CharacterizationThere are two types of characterization. There should be notes reflected in the INB that define each type; direct and indirect. Please use the Powerpoint presentation below on characterization to solidify information or clarify questions as you study and complete activities and assignments.
Figurative Language
There are many types of figurative language that enhance the reading experience by providing imagery and comparisons. There should be notes reflected in the INB that define each type of figurative language found on the Powerpoint. You should also place the text structure study guide in your INB. Include at least one example of each in your notes as well. Use the Powerpoint presentation below to solidify information or clarify questions as you study and complete activities and assignments.

Text Structures
There are many types of text structures that help you understand what you are reading by providing a way to organize the imagery and comparisons that are found in the text. There are text structures for fiction and non-fiction writing/reading. There should be notes reflected in the INB that define each type of text structure found on the Powerpoint. Include at least one example of each in your notes as well. Use the Powerpoint presentation below to solidify information or clarify questions as you study and complete activities and assignments.
