  • What is ESOL?

    ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages.

     
    What is the purpose of ESOL? 
    The goal of the ESOL Program is to ensure that all students, with varying levels of limited English proficiency, receive comparable and comprehensible instruction. This instruction helps our students to develop communicative and academic skills necessary for meeting national, state, and district educational standards. 
     
    Who participates in ESOL?
    Students whose primary language is one other than English, or whose first learned language is one other than English, most often qualify for the ESL program. To qualify the student must have a level of English language proficiency below that of a native speaker in any of the language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A student’s level of English language proficiency is determined by the test results of the W-APT and/or ACCESS for ELLs.
     
    What does my student do in ESOL? 
    In ESOL class we will read, write, speak, and listen in English. We focus on academic and social vocabulary so that English Learners can be successful in the school setting. We follow the WIDA standards.
