Fry Sight Words

                                    Kindergarten needs to know at least the first 2 lists by the end of the school year.

Our goal is to recognize 200+ Fry sight words by the end of Kindergarten. On this page there are listed resources and games you may use to help your Kindergarten student meet their goal. 

Practice sight words by singing them to a familiar song or making up your own. Some songs to try include “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

Clap It!

Say each sight word, then spell it; clapping once for each letter.

Jump on It!

Copy sight words on index cards (one word per card). Make a second set of the same words. Scatter one set face up on the floor, leaving about a foot between each card. Place the other set in a stack face down. Turn over the first card in the stack. Have your child read the word (offer help as needed) and then jump on the corresponding card on the floor. Turn over the next card and have your child read it and jump to that word. Continue until your child has jumped on all of the words. Mix up the cards and play again!

Zap It!

Place all your sight word cards inside a container. Make a few new cards with the word ZAP on them. Take turns with a partner pulling out cards one at a time and saying the sight word. If you say it correctly, you get to keep the card. The player with the most sight word cards wins! If you pull out a ZAP card you have to put all your cards back in the container and start over.

Which Word Wins?

Sit with your child and look at a newspaper or magazine to see just how often sight words pop up in print. Ask your child to choose a sight word. Look to see how many times you can find it in the newspaper. Highlight and count the word each time it appears. Try the same thing with a second sight word. Which word appears more often?

How Much For That Word?

Give each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 26. Guess which sight word on the list will be worth the most points. Find out!
