The mission of the Smith – Barnes Media Center is to prepare students for life-long learning, informed decision-making, a love of reading, and the use of information technologies.

Open Access Schedules:

Smith-Barnes operates on an open access schedule. Students may come to the library media center at any time -- individually, in small groups, or with their entire class -- to check out and return materials, to read for pleasure or information, or research topics for reports, using a variety of resources.

Collaborative Instruction
Instruction comes from the library media specialist and the classroom teacher co-planning to create lessons that incorporate information literacy skills with the Georgia Standards, in order to create authentic learning. By working together, the library media specialist and the classroom teachers are able to both work with students as they use information and technology. Our lessons and projects help prepare students for the 21st Century by helping them become effective users of information and technology.

Special Programming
The library media program coordinates “Your Six Flags Read to Succeed Program” sponsored by Weekly Reader.  We host the annual Read Across America Week. In addition, the library media center host two book fairs, and a variety of other special events and programming throughout the year.

Volunteers
The library media center is always looking for parent volunteers to help shelve books, prepare new bulletin boards, assist with the school book fairs, and other tasks. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Jeffrey-Smith at (770) 474-4066.

Check out Policies: 

Number of Items: Students are limited to the number of items for which they can be responsible!

Check-Out Time Limit: Students may keep items for one week. Students are encouraged to return the items to the library media center as soon as they are finished so they can check out new ones!

Overdue Fines: There are no fines; however, students must return overdue items before new items may be checked out.

Lost Books: Students who lose or damage books will be charged the replacement cost of the book. Student who lose books and do not pay for them will be limited to using books only in the media center.
