Chief Warrant Officer 5 Rodney D. Freeman, a native of Clarks Hill, South Carolina, enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in November 1988. He graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island in February 1989 and reported to military occupational specialty (MOS) school in Fort McClellan, Alabama where he was trained as a Nuclear Biological Chemical Defense (NBCD) Specialist.
In March 1989, Private First Class Freeman was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, G-3 NBCD Platoon where he would deploy in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm from December 1990 to May 1991. In June 1991, Corporal Freeman was ordered to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines where he would deploy with 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) from December 1991 through June 1992 and later deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program from June 1993 to December 1993. In April 1994, Sergeant Freeman was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, G-3 NBCD Platoon where he would serve as Training Chief. In July 1994, Sergeant Freeman was assigned to the Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic NBCD School, Camp Geiger as the Chief Instructor.
In July 1995, Sergeant Freeman reported for Drill Instructor Duty, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island and was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Sergeant Freeman would serve as Drill Instructor, Receiving Drill Instructor, and Senior Drill Instructor. He was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant 1 April 1997.
In December 1997, Staff Sergeant Freeman reported to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, G-3 NBCD Platoon. He would serve as Platoon Sergeant, Operational and Logistical Readiness Inspector and Corporals Course Instructor. In June 1999, Staff Sergeant Freeman was selected to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and subsequently selected to the rank of Warrant Officer in August 1999.
Upon appointment to the rank of Warrant Officer on 1 February 2000, Warrant Officer Freeman reported to the Warrant Officer Basic Course and the subsequent MOS school. Upon graduation, he reported to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines. Warrant Officer Freeman would also serve as Readiness Officer and Headquarters and Service Company Executive Officer. From December 2000 to April 2001, Warrant Officer Freeman would serve as Headquarters and Service Company Commander.
On 1 August 2001, he was commissioned to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2. He would deploy with Battalion Landing Team 2/6, 22nd MEU (Special Operations Capable) from February to August 2002. From March to May 2003, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Freeman would deploy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In August 2003, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Freeman reported for duty with Marine Wing Support Group 17, Okinawa, Japan. Upon selection to Chief Warrant Officer 3, he was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, G-3 NBCD Platoon.
In August 2007, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Freeman transferred to 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion. He would also serve as Assistant Operations Officer and Operations Officer. In January 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4.
In July 2009, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Freeman reported to the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force. He would serve as the Identification and Detection Platoon Commander, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defense (CBRND) Platoon Commander, Current Operations Officer, and Initial Response Force (IRF) Commander. His 145-man IRF would forward deploy in support of multiple National Security Special Events, such as the Presidential State of the Union Address 2011, Nuclear Security Summit 2010, and Winter Olympics 2010.
In October 2012, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Freeman was ordered to II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). He was promoted to his current rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 on 1 December 2012. From January 2013 to January 2014, he would deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. subsequently, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Freeman was assigned to the Operations Directorate, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Freeman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies from the University of Maryland University College and a Master of Arts Degree in Management and Leadership from Webster University.
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Freeman’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with 1 gold star in lieu of second award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 4 gold stars in lieu of fifth award) and the Combat Action Ribbon.
